MakeUseOf.com has a great article today about search engines that help the environment, so we thought we’d let you know about some of the best ones here on this blog.

  1. Forestle – Forestle is a search engine powered by Yahoo search that uses the ad revenue generated by searches to protect endangered rainforests. The money goes to The Nature Conservancy’s adopt a acre programme and it’s estimated that by using Forestle for all your searching you could be saving about 100 square meters of rain forest a year.
To visit the Forestle site click here.
  2. Znout – Znout is powered by Google and stands for Zero Negative OUTput. Znout is CO2 neutral because it uses revenue from ads to purchase renewable energy certificates (similar to carbon credits).
    To visit Znout click here.
  3. ClimateGift – ClimateGift is a search engine that allows you to choose an environmental organisation and they will then donate 50% of the ad revenue generated to that organisation. ClimateGift also allows you to personalise your homepage similar to iGoogle.
    To visit ClimateGift click here.
  4. Ecocho – Ecocho is another search engine powered by Yahoo. Based in Australia Ecocho donates the money it makes from ads towards growing trees in New South Wales. They estimate that for every 1000 searches made they will grow 2 trees.
